Is there growth beyond the boom? The Bicycle Association publishes the report on the impact of cycling in 2021 – Landscape

The Bicycle Association (BA) has released its 2021 cycling impact report, “Is There Growth Beyond the Boom?”

The report is based on the latest figures from the BA Market Data Service, gathered from monthly retail sales data from tills across the country, and details how the UK cycling market has reached new heights during the Covid pandemic. -19.

The road has been tougher in 2021, however, as changing supply and demand dynamics have played out across the industry. 2021 was up 34% from 2019, with strong double-digit value growth seen across all categories, but the total number of bikes sold in 2021 was down from 2019.

“Our data proves that if you take half the cars, vans and trucks off our roads, there’s a very significant emerging demand for cycling,” said Steve Garidis, chief executive of BA. “It also proves that without significant policy intervention to correct the car-centric status quo and heavy traffic, the growth of cycling will be stunted in the UK.”

Simon Irons, Director of the BA Market Data Service, added: “The BA has seen a boom in interest from the financial sector, with particular attention to trends, mergers and acquisitions. This sector will continue to attract investor interest and we are confident that cycling will see significant growth in the years to come.

The report was produced using data from the BA’s Market Data Service, powered by Sports Marketing Surveys, a UK-wide monthly collection of sales data sourced directly from retailers across the countries, covering over two-thirds of the UK cycling market.

‘Is There Growth Beyond the Boom: UK Cycling Market Report 2021’ is a 58-page report providing a detailed analysis of the sales and growth of the cycling industry in calendar year 2021. It incorporates data from selling the BA with broader data sets, from weather patterns to the National Travel Survey, to provide credible and comprehensive analysis of the UK market.

The report is one of the few the BA is making available beyond its members, and it is published to provide a definitive picture of what is happening in the UK market.
