Honda makes a big comeback in non-luxury brand categories, Tesla tops luxury brands

Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Award winners lead the pack when it comes to capturing the attention of new car buyers

For the sixth time in the past nine years, Honda wins the award for best overall brand for 2022 among non-luxury automakers. Honda earned the highest average score in all the non-luxury model assessments to win the top overall brand. Honda ranks first in reputation, fuel efficiency, interior design and technology with the help of the Accord, CR-V and Civic. Honda has made a resounding comeback with significant technological advancements and its continued quest to improve quality at every stage of product development. Additionally, Honda once again wins the Best Value Brand award, an award it has impressively topped for eight consecutive years. In addition to viewing the Honda brand as excellent value, non-luxury shoppers also crowned Honda the most refined brand for the third time in the past nine years.

Meanwhile, Tesla continues to make notable waves in the minds of luxury car buyers for 2022. Tesla wins Best Overall Luxury Brand for the third year in a row, earning the highest average score of any the evaluations of the luxury models to win the prize. Tesla launched the Model S Plaid+ trim, which favorably influenced brand perceptions with a zero-to-60 mph time of under 1.99 seconds, an impressive jump in range to 520 miles, and a revamped interior design that turns your head. Additionally, Tesla won specific awards this year for Best Value Luxury Brand and Most Refined Luxury Brand, earning both accolades for the third year in a row.

Toyota wins the 2022 Best Overall Truck Brand award for the fourth year in a row. Toyota received the highest average score for all truck model ratings and 12 weighted importance factors. The all-new Tundra caused a stir in Toyota’s truck lineup with the 3.5L i-Force twin-turbo V6 engine that develops up to 389 horsepower and a towing capacity of 12,000 pounds.

Beyond the best overall brands, other automakers have repeatedly won notable brand image awards for 2022. Subaru has impressively captured the minds of non-luxury car buyers as the most reliable every year since 2015, and it’s the third year in a row buyers have named Subaru Best Performance Brand – an award it’s won six times in the past eight years. Dodge wins the award for best car styling brand among non-luxury buyers for the fourth year in a row. In addition, Porsche returns this year to the circle of Brand Image Award winners for Best Car Styling Luxury Brand, won in 2019 and 2021, and Best Performance Luxury Brand, last won in 2019. Rounding out the 2022 Brand Image Award winners, Lexus once again won the Most Trusted Luxury Brand award, an award it has dominated for seven consecutive years.
