Millions of people sign petition against 110-year sentence for Rogel Aguilera-Mederos
Shortly after trucker Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced to 110 years in prison for causing an accident on Interstate 70 that killed four people in April 2019, the League of United Latin American Citizens asked the governor Jared Polis to commute or pardon Aguilera-Mederos, saying the Houston resident, an immigrant from Cuba, was innocent of the charges.
And one Change.org petition“Offer commutation as time served, or grant mercy to Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, 23,” has already collected more than four million signatures.
The discussion was swift and furious, and in their comments on the Westword Facebook post reporting the responses to the conviction, readers show how divided people are across the country. Said Kerry:
I saw this accident happen. It was horrible. I couldn’t believe it when I saw him try to get out of there instead of helping people. He deserves prison, but not 110 years. And the trucking company also deserves to be questioned!
All because this company gave an incredibly inexperienced driver with a brand new business license, who barely spoke / read English, and sent him straight into the mountains with a full load. What could go wrong?
Suggests to Mike:
No injustice. He never should have been here and certainly never should have worked here, let alone driving a rig.
He should not have been sentenced to 110 years. Murderers and rapists got less. It is not fair. Others who were involved in car crashes that killed others, who were drunk or drugged while driving, were sentenced to terms of 20 to 25 years. It is a serious miscarriage of justice.
Offer to Marie:
He was found guilty by a jury. He stopped his truck because his brakes were already smoking and failing, he decided to get back into his truck and continue down the mountain. At that point, his brakes completely failed. He murdered four people and permanently injured sixteen others. What must be his sentence?
His sentence is ridiculously harsh, but he still made choices that led to the crash, such as ignoring several ramps of fleeing trucks. His sentence should not be more than that of rapists and murderers, but he is not innocent and deserves punishment. But so does the trucking company.
The law is written that he is convicted on charges; he had over 27 charges totaling 110 years. The judge even said he wouldn’t have handed down that sentence but that’s the way the law is written… it will be reduced… you all have to relax…
