‘Women Only Spin’ a great success

Cycling

The Cavan Women Only Cycle Spin took place on Sunday 6th March with the ‘big start’ from the Kilmore Hotel. The ladies took a 20k or 40k ride, returning to the Kilmore Hotel where female club members from DB Cycling Club, Smugglers Cycling Club, CKR, Virginia Triathlon and Cycling Club, the Folly Rockets, Breffni Wheelers and their neighbors of Clones Cycling Club, enjoyed light refreshments provided by Cavan Sports Partnership.

It was the first time a Women Only Spin had been held in the county with the support of Cycling Ulster and was to coincide with International Women’s Day. The event was very well organized and special thanks are due to An Garda Siochana and the club members who organized the course to ensure everyone returned home safely.

The event was organized to promote cycling as a physical activity for women of all ages and abilities.

To this end, Cycling Ulster has designed a special eight-week programme, known as Women On Wheels (“WOW” for short) to encourage greater participation of women in the sport.

The WOW program will take absolute beginner adult cyclists (or those who lack a bit of practice) on a cycle accessible to all every weekend for eight weeks, with the intention of increasing the distance a little each week. Once the eight weeks are over, participants will be encouraged to take part in the Emyvale Women Only Sportive scheduled for June 12. If they wish, participants can then join their local cycling club.

The WOW program will be offered by County Cavan cycling clubs and for those interested, please see your local club’s Facebook page which will provide the link for you to sign up.

There will be a modest cost for the WOW program, mainly to cover the cost of insurance. The WOW program kicks off in early April, so there’s plenty of time to check out your bike and find your helmet.

The county’s cycling clubs look forward to seeing many more women take part in this lifelong sport.
